New words

Just reading a review of the New Oxford American Dictionary in Issue 443 of "World Wide Words" by Michael Quinion (see http:/www.worldwideworlds.org)

Lots of fun new words:

• "agitainment" - "farm-based entertainment, typically developed as a revenue source for small-scale farmers and including a wide range of activities"
• "buckle bunny" - "a woman who is a follower or devotee of rodeos and cowboys"
• "bridezilla" - "an over-zealous bride-to-be who acts irrationally or causes offense"
• "C-level" - "the executive level of a corporation"
• "diabulemia" - "the manipulation by diabetic patients of insulin treatments in order to lose weight
• "clueful" - "well-informed"
• "fanboy" - an obsessive male fan, usually of movies, comic books, or science fiction"
• "October surprise" - "any political event orchestrated (or
  apparently orchestrated) in the month before an election, in the
  hopes of affecting the outcome"
  

Can't wait to start using some of these babies.

Joan of Arcadia and Michael Faraday

Melissa picked up the first season of JOA and we watched the pilot yesterday. In it, Luke quotes Faraday - "Nothing is too wonderful to be true" in repsosne to Joan's question fo whether God could be a hot guy. Faraday - perfect quote to introduce our science geek in a show about God. Here's the full quote:

“All this is a dream.  Still, examine it by a few experiments.  Nothing is
too wonderful to be true, if it be consistent with the laws of nature, and
in such things as these, experiment is the best test of such consistency.”

These words appeared in his diary entry (March 19, 1849). Faraday (1791-1867) was a deeply
religious philosopher and founding father of much of modern science. These were his thoughts shortly after he began to think that a relation existed between gravity and electricity.

Two years later, after extensive experimentation, he ended his lengthy article in *Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society* with the following words:

“Here end my trials for the present.  The results are negative; they do not
shake my strong feeling of an existence of a relation between gravity and
electricity, though they give no proof that such a relation exists.”

And, as we now know, they do.

Did you know that you can tell how big an elephant is from its tracks? You measure the diameter of the front foot and multiply it by 6. That gives you the height to the elephant's shoulder. Did you know monkeys have 32 calls and 24 of them are for warning other animals that predators are around?
